Team Federation's favourite iPhone/iPad apps

Federation Media Blog Richard's most useful Apps:
  • Runkeeper - Running application which is changed my training and frankly my enjoyment of training for the March 12 Motutapu Offroad Marathon.  It has coaching and calls out 5 minute splits with distance, total time and pace (mins per KM) - very good for motivation.  It has a great mapping application and does not seem to kill your battery like other GPS recording apps.
  • Viewmaster - NZ topo maps, has a in app payment system to download map tiles but not really that expensive.  I use this to plan offroad runs, and to find myself when I get lost.
  • New York Times - In my view the best news app (for the content - the actual application is not great).  This may only be available in the US app store.
  • ReQall - Voice to text app. As I live in the Waitakere's and commute to work 25 km each way I frequently use this app to record thoughts.  You record it and then the application will transcribe it and email it to you - for free.  The transcription is pretty good - it generally only trips up on the Kiwi slang and accent.  Fish becomes "fush".
  • Toodledo - Great GTD todo application.
  • LastFM - I reckon the best internet radio app (better than Pandora and Slacker) we have a subscription for work (a measly USD$3 per month) which I use at home also.
Richard's iPhone Tips
  • Get a US iTunes account.  This will give you access to loads of Apps, free music and free iBooks not available in the NZ app store.
  • If you have a 3G iPhone don't upgrade the OS to 4 unless you feel like you must - in typical Apple fashion - iOS 4 makes the phone run very slowly, effectively
  • Use Gmail for mail - fast and full featured without the need to have an Exchange server
  • Don't over use your iPhone it can strain relationships
